18 August 2025. Some of you American Causey/Cossey cousins have come to find out that just because we spell our surnames differently doesn’t mean we don’t have a common Grandfather. We know we possess a common terminal Y-DNA Haplogroup. We know that a mutation occurred sometime around 1750 splitting off from T-FTE36788, probably via a son of Thomas Causey, Sr. (c1690-1776), Thomas Causey, Jr. (1719-1775). When did the spelling of Causey switch to Cossey is unclear. We do know where and how. As the sons of Thomas Causey began a migration south and west from Caroline County, Maryland, the surname did not immediately change for some of the Causey boys. But as some moved west from around Guilford County, North Carolina into Tennessee we can document that many County Scribes began to spell these cousin’s surname “Cossey”.
